As if Health Datapalooza was not already packed with headline news, ex-ONC head Farzad Mostashari ratcheted up the excitement level by launching Data Independence Day.
That’s right, Data Independence Day.
Mostashari, a Get Real Health board member, is spearheading a grass roots effort, Get My Health Data, to free up access to health data for all Americans. The website features the opening statement “We the people want easy, electronic access to our health information.”
That declaration is at the core of the effort which features a petition asking lawmakers, hospitals and all Health IT stakeholders to listen to patients who want control over their medical data.
Organizers also state “We think this petition is a good way to start a national conversation about consumer demand for online access and tools to manage health.”
Those organizers include industry thought leaders as well as influential corporate heads. Former U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra, Christine Bechtel, Chair, Consumer Workgroup, Health IT Policy Committee and Craig Newmark of craigslist and craigconnect are among those who have pledged their support.
“The Get My Health Data initiative is exciting because it provides one place for consumers to use their voice and demand access to their health information,” said Get Real Health’s Senior Healthcare Strategist, Christina Caraballo. “What’s great about the initiative is that it widens the scope of who can effectively promote access to data. Not only will patient advocates continue their push for access, but friends, family and everyday Americans will be able to demand the same.”
