Applauding ONC’s Planned Committee Changes

April 14, 2014Christina Nash
Get Real Health VP of Marketing & Strategy Cortney Nicolato, CPHIT, was happy to see the recent report in FierceHealthIT on ONC’s planned changes to its workgroups (DeSalvo unveils plan to transition ONC to ‘less siloed’ workgroups, 4-10-14).

“I like the changes that Dr. DeSalvo is proposing,” said Nicolato. “These committees and workgroups have provided great value in the past, but have been fundamentally focused on driving regulations and their implementation. This is a good time to start looking at how the committees drive outcomes, specifically clinical outcomes and reductions in healthcare costs in the U.S. — leveraging the nation’s successes with Meaningful Use, the number of providers who are now electronic, and providing patients access to their data.”

National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo reportedly plans to adjust the focus of ONC’s workgroups to concentrate on four priority areas:
– Health IT strategic planning
– Advanced health models and Meaningful Use
– Health IT implementation, usability and safety
– Interoperability and health information exchange

“The new committee format, I believe, will not only spark and promote innovation, but also will allow consumers’ and patients’ voices to be heard throughout the committees and workgroups,” said Nicolato. “Get Real Health looks forward to supporting these groups in any way that we can.”

DeSalvo’s presentation can be found here.
